There have clearly been people all over the world for generations that have shared the idea that cleaning up– and taking daily positive action– is a great way to live, and a worthy action to share and spread. Tuula-Maria Ahonen, Founder of the Finnish Litter Movement is clearly one such light making a positive difference.

Litter Project supports her work wholeheartedly. We also humbly hope that this website helps spread a similar idea to even more people that it might reach the corners of the globe. At this time in human history, we clearly need all the bright lights shining.

Day of Service

As you hopefully have heard, Monday, January 19, millions of Americans are expected to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and answer President-elect Obama’s call to service by volunteering for community causes that matter to them.

This is a great opportunity to set aside some time to help others doing something you’ve always wanted to do… and to be in good company with millions of others who have joined efforts in the spirit of service.

If you haven’t yet decided what you want to do, or don’t have lots of free time, I encourage you to participate in LitterProject, by cleaning up litter in a favorite– or simply hurting– community spot. Bring a bag or two, a pair of gloves, and maybe even a friend, and pick up trash and dispose of it in a thoughtful way. This is a simple way to make a difference and lets you participate in something great.

Elect yourself

One of the reasons I felt it was important to get the LitterProject message out was to empower people to make a difference. Every day. This is as much an exercise in participation in the world, as it is a method to clean up litter.

Many of us feel that the world is out of control, with issues like climate change, cultural decline, and economic meltdowns getting us down. And many more of us feel that these issues are so big, so far beyond our grasp, that there is little we can do to stop them.

This is simply not true. We can stop things from spiraling out of control and we can make things better, in whatever arenas matter most to us. We just need to stop thinking huge (if we feel paralyzed), and start acting small (because we can do that TODAY). Then as we get stronger, we can think and act bigger and so on….

I sincerely hope that LitterProject’s message to take simple, do-able action every day makes you stronger– much like lifting weights every day builds muscle. We need the musculature of change in this world. And I mean, some serious strength. Start today where you can and participate.

Although LitterProject is a non-political movement, I am strongly endorsing Barak Obama because of his commitment, style of leadership, and call for action that are in harmony with LitterProject ideals. When asked at the debate last night about what Americans would be called to sacrifice in order to improve the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into, Obama made a call for differences in economic habits, ecological, fuel consumption habits as well. He understands that we all must participate to improve our situation and standing in the world. This is the kind of leader I want– one who respects our intelligence and inspires our action.

So, on Nov 4th, please vote. And for every day between now and then… do a little something to improve things in your neck of the woods…
